EVENING / WEEKEND COURSES

Laminate and Hardwood Floor Installation

This course is designed to provide learners with the basic skills and knowledge required to safely prepare and install common types of flooring materials in accordance with the National Building Code of Canada, manufacturers’ recommendations and accepted safe work practices.  It involves trade mathematics, flooring tool fundamentals and other related equipment and materials.

 

Upon completion of this course, learners will have the basic understanding of:

-          Installation of wood sub-floors over concrete (excludes in-floor heating)

-         Cutting and installing underlayment

-         Using hand, portable and stationary power tools to layout and install laminate and hardwood strip flooring.

 

 

Duration:   6 hrs

Decks, Patios and Exterior Wooden Stairs

This course is designed to provide learners with the basic skills and knowledge required to safely build decks, patios and exterior wooden stairs in accordance with the National Building Code of Canada and accepted safe work practices.  It involves trade mathematics, basic tool fundamentals and other related equipment and materials.

 

Upon completion of this course, learners will have the basic understanding of:

-         selecting and estimating materials for decks and patios

-         installing supporting members (posts, beams, cross braces)

-         identifying and selecting fasteners

-         identifying and installing joist hangers and joists

-         framing openings

-         applying decking materials and guardrails

-         calculating and constructing exterior wooden stairs

-         installing handrails.

Home Buyer’s Awareness

 

This course is designed to provide learners with the basic skills required to perform a basic inspection of a new or used home prior to purchase.

 

Upon successful completion of this course, learners will understand how to perform a basic walk through home inspection regarding the general condition of the property and complete a pre-delivery inspection (PDI) before closing.

 

Duration:    3 hrs

Exterior Door & Window Installation

This course is designed to provide learners with the basic skills and knowledge required to safely prepare for and install exterior windows and doors in accordance with the National Building Code of Canada, manufacturers’ recommendations and accepted safe work practices.  It involves trade mathematics, basic tool fundamentals and other related equipment and materials.

 

Upon completion of this course, learners will have the basic understanding to:

-         prepare and install exterior frames (wood/vinyl)

-         install accessories

-         use proper hand and portable power tools

 

Duration:    3 hrs

Roofing (Shingles)

 

This introductory course is designed to provide learners with the basic skills and knowledge required to estimate, and safely layout and install common types of roofing materials on basic roof designs.  Practical projects will include the installation of eave protection, starter strips, asphalt shingles, and ridge caps to the standards set by the National Building Code of Canada.

 

Upon completion of this course, learners will understand the tasks necessary to safely install asphalt roof shingles using hand tools to the standards set by the National Building Code of Canada.

 

Duration:    3 hrs

Interior Trim Installation

 

This course is designed to provide learners with the basic skills and knowledge required to cut and install various types of interior trims using accepted safe work practices.  It involves tool safety and other related equipment and materials.

 

Upon completion of this course, the learner will understand how to:

-         cut and install door and windows casing

-         cut and install baseboards and other speciality trims

-         use hand tools and portable power tools

 

Duration:    3 hrs

Interior Door & Trim Installation 

 

This course is designed to provide learner with the basic skills and knowledge required to safely install door jambs and various types of interior trims using accepted safe work practices.  It involves trade mathematics, tool safety and other related equipment and materials.

 

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will understand how to:

-         assemble and install wooden door jambs

-         fit and install interior doors and lock sets

-         fur exterior frames

-         install door

-         install window casing, baseboards and other speciality trims using hand tools and stationary and portable power tools.

Air Barriers, Insulation and Vapour Barriers

 

This course is designed to provide learners with the basic skills and knowledge required to prepare for, estimate and install air barriers, insulation and vapour barriers in accordance with the National Building Code of Canada, manufacturers’ recommendations and accepted safe work practices.

 

Upon completion of this course, learners will understand the procedures to

-         estimate and install air barriers

-         estimate and install insulation and vapour barriers

-         use hand and portable power tools

 

Duration:    4 hrs

Small Engine Maintenance (Lawn and Garden)

 

This course is designed to provide learners with the basic skills and knowledge required to perform annual maintenance on lawn and garden equipment such as lawnmowers and gas trimmers.

 

Upon completion of this course, learners will understand how to perform basic maintenance including:

-         change oil and filter

-         sharpen blade

-         balance blade

-         use hand tools

 

Duration:    3 hrs

Small Engine Maintenance (Snow Blower)

 

This course is designed to provide learners with the basic skills and knowledge required to perform annual maintenance on snow blowers.

 

 Upon completion of this course, learners will understand how to perform basic maintenance including:

-         change drive belts

-         change oil

-         determine spark plug condition

     -    grease and oil components

 

Duration:    3 hrs

Small Engine Maintenance (Recreational Vehicles)

 

This course is designed to provide learners with the basic skills and knowledge required to perform routine maintenance recreational equipment.

 

Upon completion of this course, learners will understand how to perform basic maintenance on two-stroke and four-stroke gasoline engine equipment.

 

Duration:    3 hrs

Introduction to MIG Welding

 

This introductory course is designed to provide learners with a basic understanding GMAW (MIG) welding safety, machine set up, and general welding techniques.

 

Upon completion of this course, learners will understand how to safely perform basic GMAW (MIG) welding operations (Butt, Lap and Tee joints) in the flat position

 

Duration:    6 hrs

Basic Soldering (Install / Repair Copper Piping)

 

This introductory course is designed to provide learners with the basic skills and knowledge required to safely install and/or repair copper piping.  

 

Upon completion of this course, learners will understand the basic soldering operations required to:

-         install and/or repair copper piping

-         repair a variety of joint and piping configurations

 

Duration:    3 hrs

Basic Plastering

 

This course is designed to provide learners with the basic knowledge and skills required to repair minor defects to drywall surfaces.                                    

 

Upon completion of this course, learners understand how to:

-         select and use plastering tools and materials

-         repair common cracks, dents, and small holes in drywall surfaces

 

Duration:    3 hrs

Basic Painting Techniques

 

This course is designed to provide learners with the basic skills and knowledge required to paint interior surfaces.         

 

Upon completion of this course, the learner will understand how to:

-         select and use brushes, rollers and associated equipment

-         perform basic painting operations

-         properly clean equipment

-         provide safe storage and/or disposal of materials after use.

Portable Ladder Safety

 

This course is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required to interpret and apply the Newfoundland and Labrador Occupational Health Safety Regulations regarding the use of portable ladders.

-         conduct a basic inspection of ladders for possible defects

-         safely erect and use portable ladders
